Extension Activity: Anti-Superstition Demonastration

Superstition is one of the widely spread vices in our society. Many unfortunate incidents keep appearing in newspapers. The gravity of situation was realized in Maharashtra as well and the Maharashtra Assembly created history by passing the much-awaited anti-superstitions bill in the winter session of the state legislature in Nagpur on Friday 13th December 2013.

NSS unit of our college organized a demonstration by staff members of Chemistry Department in Kanhe Gaon against superstitions on 15th December 2013. It is necessary to create awareness in our society to provide a healthy and safe social environment with a view to protect the poor and ignorant people against the evil and sinister practices and customs thriving on blind faith, beliefs and ignorance. The blind faith and beliefs are propagated in the name of God or some so called divine or super natural or magical powers or evil spirits. The God's men, quacks and conmen exploit and harm mentally, physically and financially the poor and ignorant people in the Society thereby destroying the very social fabric of the Society.

During NSS Winter Camp, the demonstration on 7th December 2014, was given to the students of orphanage, special children and other villagers at Naigaon. The students showed how with the help of chemical reactions, artificial blood is shed from hands and people are deceived by the trick. Other items presented by students include getting blood from lemon, generation of fume in an empty beaker, burning sugar with very bright flame, burning the cloth without damaging the fabrics. They talked about Late Narendra Dabolkar, President; Maharashtra Andhrashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (MANS) which is an organization working towards eradication of superstitions.

The department of chemistry had organized a superstition eradicating programme  “Chemistry behind superstition” under “Be Safe” programme on 1st Feb 2017.The programme was conducted in green auditorium.Students of T.Y.BSc. demonstrated short reactions that illustrates superstition. The programme was conducted in three sessions as
